Essential Oil Eucalyptus – (Eucalyptus Globulus)
Essential oil Eucalyptus is obtained via steam distillation from the leaves and twigs. It is cultivated from Australia, China, Spain and South Africa and is colourless to a pale yellow.
Used in many cold preparations as it is known for its nasal/sinus congestion. This is because it help people with excess mucous and may possibly help to thin the mucous. It can also help with the aches and pains as it is a warming oil.
It is excellent used as a steam inhalation for blocked sinuses and coughs. Use 1 or 2 drops in a bowl filled with hot, but not boiling water. Use a towel over your head and gently lean over the steam. Dont worry if you cant breathe through your nose, just use your mouth. Blow your nose occasionally until you can gain relief. If you find the natural smell of eucalyptus overpowering, some essential oil retailers will sell lemon eucalyptus which still give you all the benefits of eucalyptus. Lemon eucalyptus will also act as an air deterrent to any nasty bugs when used in an oil burner.
For aches and pains, 2 drops of essential oil Eucaylptus mixed with a very small amount of vegetable oil then rubbed into the affected areas will provide relief.
Cautions – not suitable for babies under 12months, or chronic asthmatics.
Fun fact: Eucalyptus oil is used in fabric softner to give a fresh smell!
